Basic information:
The self-standing circular tower in the center of Veli Lošinj was built in the 15th century, during the first decades of the Venetian rule of the east coast of the Adriatic. Having thick walls, small openings and being relatively short (17 m), it resisted cannon fire from hostile ships for centuries, protecting the residents of Veli Lošinj from pirates’ marauding attacks. Once a dominant building in the town port, in the early 19th century it lost its military significance and obtained a symbolic meaning, appearing on the crest of the newly established Municipality of Veli Lošinj. After almost two years of dilapidation, it was thoroughly reconstructed and the Kula Museum & Gallery was opened in it in 2001 as part of the Lošinj Museum, speaking of the glorious history of Veli Lošinj maritime activities and tourism through permanent layouts.
